Open Droplet – materials science and design

Things are progressing apace with Open Droplet, our open hardware water metre. For the latest tech update, you can check out the Open Droplet Update on iilab’s blog. From my perspective, I am really looking forward to testing out the materials properties for the casing – seeing whether the epoxy or polyurethane will be able to conduct sufficient heat to stop the device exploding (exciting!) and whether the microphone will still be able to detect the sound of the water flow if it’s encased in x amount of casing. We should be getting the resins very shortly and then we’ll start the experiments and work on making it look gorgeous to boot. I’m particularly interesting in making sure it has a satisfying heft and sexy tactile shape. I can’t wait!
